Our Story

A legacy of hope and empowerment. In 1879, Zion Wesley Institute was founded to provide education and hope to African Americans. Eight years later, the school changed its name to Livingstone College, making history by granting degrees to ten courageous students, including the first black women to earn bachelor's degrees in North Carolina. Today, Livingstone remains dedicated to empowering individuals through education, offering a wide range of academic programmes including STEM fields. With a continued commitment to excellence and equity in STEM education, Livingstone is preparing the next generation of STEM leaders to positively impact their communities and the world.
Historic grant rejuvenates stem. In 2021, Livingstone College received the largest single grant in the history of the college. The $2.24 million grant was awarded to the STEM Programme from the National Science Foundation to fund the “Livingwell@Livingstone” initiative. This funding is being utilized to develop and implement a powerful STEM innovation ecosystem that is tailored to bolster the persistence, retention, and graduation rates of underrepresented minority students. Through this dynamic programme, we are working to equip all of our students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence necessary to succeed in the competitive world of STEM.
F. George shipman science annex revolutionizes livingstone's stem department. In 2022, Livingstone College completed construction on the F. George Shipman Science Annex, named after the college's sixth president. This state-of-the-art facility spans 16,000 square feet and includes dedicated laboratory and research spaces for different disciplines, a planetarium and immersion theater, classrooms, and a hydroponic greenhouse. This facility provides a platform for students, faculty, staff, and the Salisbury community to take a deeper dive into understanding the world through science.
